See Your Gyno if Your Breast Does This

If you spontaneously or can express fluid from one of your nipples we suggest you see your gyno. Breast discharge, when you are not breastfeeding is considered a medical condition, but after breastfeeding women physiologically should no longer have any discharge. So even if you once breastfed a baby, don’t assume persistent discharge is normal.

The color of the discharge does not exactly tell you a diagnosis nor confirm whether it is a serious condition or not. Milk for baby is very yellow the first few days, but then it literally looks a milky white. Abnormal breast discharges, even for non-cancerous conditions can appear to be any number of colors.

Check immediately if the discharge is bloody.

Pain in the breast is more serious if it only is in one spot, not from a bruise or a specific trauma, and if it persists.

There are treatments for milk discharge that doesn’t seem to go away, but it may be worth watching and not treating with medication.

Your oral contraceptive pills or other medication may be causing this discharge.

There are tests that you should have if you find that you have discharge from one or both of your breasts. This may or may not have to include a mammogram.

If you have diabetes, sleep problems, or other medical conditions it can lead to problems with the breast as well. So make an appointment at Women’s Health Practice and we can discuss your alternatives.
