This Hormone Treatment Also is ?Anti-Estrogen

Menopause and perimenopause are complex times, and it takes individual evaluation to know what will be right for you. For some women, they need some anti-estrogen with their estrogen treatment!

A brand new concept in menopausal therapy came available a few years ago called Duavee.

This compound was a novel combination of the estrogen product Premarin, a proprietary mix of hormones that are mostly estrogen, with a SERM (has agonist and antagonist properties) compound bazedoxifene which is, because of the physiological principal of antagonist, and antiestrogen.

The bazedoxifene component is effective for bone health, helps to protect the uterine lining from cancer, and is effective for decreasing the risk of breast cancer in some studies.

We at at Women’s Health Practice had been excited to be in the clinical trials looking at the effectiveness of this medicine for flash and osteoporosis trails. To date it remains as a novel estrogen-based drug for women to treat moderate-to-severe vasomotor symptoms associated with menopause as well as prevent postmenopausal osteoporosis.

The compound contains 20 mg of the bazedoxifene and new longer term data from a 7 year study showed that it is very safe over the many years. It did have a small effect on protecting against spine fractures when used by itself, and only a small effect on bone density as well as no protection against hip or wrist fractures. The combined drug 2 year data was released and it showed there was no risk of uterine or breast cancer or endometrium For optimizing women’s health in menopausal years, individual care is important understanding what you are most at risk for, what screening tests are important, and what symptoms you want to treat
