{"id":2145,"date":"2020-03-05T12:09:25","date_gmt":"2020-03-05T12:09:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.womenshealthpractice.com\/?p=2145"},"modified":"2020-03-05T12:09:26","modified_gmt":"2020-03-05T12:09:26","slug":"mitochondria-and-our-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.womenshealthpractice.com\/?p=2145","title":{"rendered":"Mitochondria and Our Health"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>We age when we can no longer produce energy for our cells and our bodies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On a local level, our cells, the mitochondria are the microscopic energy factory. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are delicate, over several thousand of these energy producing factories are in every cell. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In actuality they are passed directly from your mother in the fertilized egg to you, and thus are our link to ancient DNA. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mitochondrial diseases can affect almost any part of the body, \nincluding the cells of the brain, nerves, muscles, kidneys, heart, \nliver, eyes, ears or pancreas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mitochondrial malfunction occurs when the mitochondria do not work as  well as they should due to conditions such as Alzheimer&#8217;s or cancer or muscular diseases; about 1\/5000 people are born with errors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Cleveland Clinic website lists these signs and symptoms of mitochondrial disease:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Poor growth<\/li><li>Muscle weakness, <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/symptoms\/17669-muscle-pain\">muscle pain<\/a>, low muscle tone, exercise intolerance<\/li><li>Vision and\/or hearing problems<\/li><li>Learning disabilities, delays in development, mental retardation<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/8855-autism\">Autism<\/a>, autism-like features<\/li><li>Heart, liver or <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/15096-kidney-disease-chronic-kidney-disease\">kidney<\/a> diseases<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/articles\/7040-gastrointestinal-disorders\">Gastrointestinal disorders<\/a>, swallowing difficulties, <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/4108-diarrhea\">diarrhea<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/4059-constipation\">constipation<\/a>, unexplained <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/symptoms\/8106-nausea--vomiting\">vomiting<\/a>, cramping, reflux<\/li><li>Diabetes<\/li><li>Increased risk of infection<\/li><li>Neurological problems, <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/articles\/6998-seizures-first-aid\">seizures<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/5005-migraine-headaches\">migraines<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/5601-stroke-understanding-stroke\">strokes<\/a><\/li><li>Movement disorders<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/8541-thyroid-disease\">Thyroid<\/a> problems<\/li><li>Respiratory (breathing) problems<\/li><li>Lactic acidosis (a buildup of lactate)<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/9170-dementia\">Dementia<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It is possible to heal your mitochondria with rest, immune system boost, but testing mitochondrial health is difficult, usually it begins with blood tests of energy metabolism. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We age when we can no longer produce energy for our cells and our bodies.
