When Hormonal Symptoms From the Pill Don’t Resolve

A variety of hormonal related symptoms may be due to just getting on oral contraception. This may be irregular menstrual bleeding, acne, moodiness, breast soreness, bloating, swelling, cramping, vaginal or vulvar symptoms, or even issues with sleep.

For the most part hormonal symptoms from being on the birth control pill resolve after about 3 months of use.

For those women who still have symptoms, changing pills can be the solution in most cases.

For other women the symptoms don’t resolve because they are caused by the decrease in your natural hormone levels, for instance being on the pills can cause SHBG changes which is a carrier molecule that lowers your testosterone levels.

For other women who have hormonal symptoms, they are due to the estrogen or progestin in the pills, and most pills have similar estrogen type and levels, so pill switching is not the solution.

For some women the symptoms were due to hormonal imbalances that were severe enough they were not normalized by the oral contraceptives that were perscribed to do just that.
