Penicillin Allergic? Maybe Not!

94% of people who think they are allergic to Penicillin are not actually allergic.

This is important because in most doctor’s offices 10-20% of people report an allergy to penicillin, but only 1% of the population really has an allergy.

It is also important to know if you are truly allergic because if you need antibiotics penicillin is a very safe one in many ways, and if you avoid it you may be given antibiotics that are inappropriate for what you need and ones that may be both more expensive and more toxic than taking penicillin would be.

Some people actually never had a true reaction. You may have once had a reaction, but actually antibodies that caused the reaction may have worn off.
