Weight Loss Medicine Amazing Other Benefits

Semaglutide , a weekly injectable weight loss medicine was first released for weight loss alone. And the effects have been dramatic and well discussed. As more and more dieters, with disparate health history are embarking on wellness journeys we are now first understanding just how effective this can be for a variety of conditions from PCOS to Alzheimer’s! These medications can extend life after heart attacks, and help to prevent strokes. Gradually the research is confirming that the health benefits extend beyond the effects of weight loss. So both in people who actually aren’t seeking weight loss, and in those who do not lose weight, the medications have benefit.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a common complication of type 2 diabetes (T2D). Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) improve glycemic control and lower body weight in people with T2D, and semaglutide (Wegovy and Ozempic) reduce the risk of cardiovascular (CV) events in those with high CV risk.  It is also indicated to reduce risk for cardiovascular events such as heart attack and stroke in adults, whether or not they have type 2 diabetes or established cardiovascular disease.

Semaglutide (2.4 mg) used in adults with obesity not only had better levels of their blood sugar, and better overall metabolism function, they also were shown to have achieved improved physical function when dieting with the aid of this medication, exercise and nutritional management. And it’s likely the non-weight loss effects will also be enhanced with the proper lifestyle alterations.

Dieters who stay on medication for longer periods of time kept losing weight, those who began dieting with medication, but stopped their medication they regained some of their newly lost weight. So we advocate a plan of fairly longer term management. FDA approval is approaching it’s third year, so that we do finally have experience of long term dieting.

A recent systematic literature review looking at many trials with almost 50,000 dieters found not only successfully weight loss, but safety in using the medicine.

Semaglutide and trizepatide can be used with other medication. But information on how to combine treatments for conditions such as cardiovascular disease, hyperlipidemias and high blood pressure is still lacking. And we do know levels of some medications could be affected and need adjustment. These injectable diet medications causes a delay of gastric emptying, it may affect the oral absorption of thyroid medications. Although heartburn has been reported as an adverse effect of semaglutide, it is usually tolerable and able to even be used by women with heartburn.

Dieting can cause nutritional deficiencies if not monitored closely. Bone loss and loss of muscle mass, may be a side effect of these types of medications and have to be monitored closely.
