What We Know on Pregnancy and Cannabis Use

Pregnant women continue to use cannabis. In some cases, it’s inadvertent (didn’t quite double check that missed period and figure out the pregnancy dates accurately!)

Data are unfortunately still scarce regarding pregnancy and cannabis use.

It’s never specifically prescribed, and it’s not really studied in planned research studies.

We have not shown specific benefits on mental health from cannabis use in pregnancy, although many do use cannabis for anxiety.

A retrospective cohort study of over 32,500 pregnant individuals that were reporting their information to the researchers, users of cannabis have increase in risk of low birth weight and small for gestational age infants.

Many cannabis users actually use cigarettes too, so conclusions have to be taken with caution. Other studies also show brain effects that may be harmful on the fetus with cannabis use by mom during pregnancy.

Pregnancy planning visits are always important before stopping contraception, there’s more than just cannabis use to discuss.
